The Facts

  • According to a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey, US Pres. Joe Biden's approval rating has dropped to 38% after having risen from 41% in January to 45% last month.

  • Among his own party, 76% of Democrats approve of Biden overall. Younger party members are less likely to approve of him, with 66% of Democrats under the age of 45 polling favorably, while 85% of those older than 45 polled in his favor.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

While the numbers don't paint the prettiest picture, Biden has what a reelection campaign needs the most: a strong policy record. He lifted US troops out of Afghanistan, mobilized the largest vaccine rollout in US history, boosted funding for scientific research, and skillfully geared the country away from an impending recession, among other accomplishments. The only argument against him is his age, but he's already become the oldest president ever while still achieving a historic agenda.

Republican narrative

Biden and the Democrats are simply living in an alternate reality. The president has opened the floodgates at the border, made a majority of Americans economically worse off than before he took office, and remains silent on his party's lockdown measures that have stolen years of education from American youth. The poll numbers certainly reflect this, but all Americans need to do is look at their wallet and watch the news to know Biden is a losing 2024 candidate.

Nerd narrative

There's an 84% chance that President Biden will officially declare his campaign for re-election by November 15, 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
