According to the 2025 report of the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change, published Tuesday, heat-related deaths have increased by 23% since the 1990s, reaching an average of 546,000 deaths annually between 2012 and 2021, while governments spent $956 billion on fossil fuel subsidies in 2023.
