Women's Tennis Association to End Boycott of China

Photo: fox

The Facts

  • The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced on Thursday that it will end its boycott of China and hold events in the country this September.

  • The WTA suspended tournaments in China in 2021 because of concerns regarding player Peng Shuai’s safety after she made a social media post accusing a senior former Chinese government official of sexual assault.

  • Peng’s post was deleted by Chinese authorities and she dropped out of public view immediately afterwards. She attempted to recant her accusation during a controlled interview at last year’s Beijing Winter Olympics — there have been no reports of her being seen in public since.

The Spin

Pro-China narrative

It’s good to see that the WTA has come to its senses and admitted it made a mistake. The WTA never had the right to demand anything from the Chinese government, especially as Peng publicly rescinded her accusation twice. Holding WTA events in Hong Kong and on the mainland again will be a win-win for tennis and for the people of China.

Anti-China narrative

The WTA should not be ending its China boycott without the government taking more action in relation to Peng’s condition. However, this conclusion was inevitable because events in China – which accounted for $30M in prize money in the last full season before COVID – are too valuable, and cash is king. It was easy for the WTA to avoid China while COVID was restricting entrance into the country but, once the rules loosened, the WTA was always going to cave.

European Space Agency Launches Mission to Jupiter's Icy Moons

The Facts

  • The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched its "Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer" (Juice) mission on an Ariane 5 rocket launched from French Guiana on Friday. The liftoff marks the start of a trek to explore the oceans on Jupiter's icy moons.

  • On Thursday, the ESA abruptly postponed the launch due to lightning risks at the launch site in Kourou, French Guiana.

  • This is the first instance that Europe will send a mission past Mars into the outer Solar System.

The Spin

Narrative A

The European space program has been a bureaucracy-made disaster as billions of taxpayer money have been diverted to the institutional grandiosity of the obsolete ESA rather than to technical developments. This has left the organization lagging even behind India in the space race. While Europe indeed has great rocket scientists, it has been a complete failure in judging the market and improving its abilities.

Narrative B

If a space revolution breaks out in the coming years, Europe will not miss it as the ESA has well-invested money in bold projects, achieving huge results. While the continent still lacks a human spaceflight program to keep pace with other nations, it is envisaging public-private partnerships to design, develop and operate space infrastructure as well as modify its inefficient geo-return contracting policy. This mission to probe the possibility of life on Jupiter's icy moons is a splash in more ways than one.

Nerd narrative

There's a 25% chance that Europa will be the first spot where humans make the discovery, if extraterrestrial life is found by 2045, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Survey: 36% of Researchers Fear ‘Nuclear Level’ AI Catastrophe

Photo: Al Jazeera

The Facts

  • In a survey conducted by Stanford University, 36% of researchers said they believe Artificial Intelligence (AI) could lead to a “nuclear-level catastrophe,” underscoring concerns in the sector about the risks posed by rapidly advancing technology.

  • Stanford’s 2023 Artificial Intelligence Index Report, which was conducted by researchers from three different universities, asked participants to agree or disagree with the statement, "It is possible that decisions made by AI or machine learning systems could cause a catastrophe this century that is at least as bad as an all-out nuclear war."

  • In addition, the report found that 73% of researchers in natural language processing — the branch of computer science concerned with developing AI — believe the technology might soon spark “revolutionary societal change.” Although an overwhelming majority of researchers believe the future net impact will be positive, concerns remain that AI will develop capabilities faster than humans can manage it.

The Spin

Narrative A

Despite just 41% of researchers believing AI should be regulated, something obviously has to be done based on the rest of this study’s results. If one-third of researchers are warning that AI could lead to a major catastrophe, and nearly three-quarters believe AI could soon lead to revolutionary societal change, then it’s time to take a pause and figure out how to avoid the dangerous results AI could produce.

Narrative B

AI is the future, and pausing or trying to set back its development won't solve any problems. AI offers a revolutionary means to address some of the world's biggest challenges, including inequity and even climate change, and it must be kept on its current track. Rather than trying to reign it in, the tricky areas of the technology simply need to be identified, and work can be done to improve them while AI continues to develop at its current pace.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance the first weakly general AI system will be devised, tested, and publicly announced by March 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Ukraine Bans Athletes from Competing Against Russia and Belarus

The Facts

  • Ukraine’s Ministry of Youth and Sports on Friday banned its country's athletes and national teams from competing in any tournament where Russian and Belarusian athletes are also taking part. The ban applies to Olympic and non-Olympic sports, as well as competitions for sporting events for disabled people.

  • It comes as Thomas Bach, Pres. of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), last month defended his decision to recommend allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to individual sports after they were banned from most international competitions last year. However, a decision has yet to be made about participation in the Olympics ahead of the 2024 Paris games.

  • Nonetheless, Bach condemned Western governments for attempting to influence his decision. He said: "It is deplorable that these governments do not address the question of double standards...It cannot be up to the governments to decide which athletes can participate in which competition. This would be the end of world sport as we know it today."

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

While the International Olympic Committee cloaks itself in self-serving rhetoric about independence and fair play, allowing Russia to compete in the Olympics after it launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is simply the wrong decision. The body must hold Russia, and its accomplice Belarus, accountable for the war crimes they've committed on the global stage.

Establishment-critical narrative

Countries who call for Russia's exclusion from sports make no mention of the scores of other countries currently involved in 70 wars across the world. This is a double standard and precisely why governments shouldn't have a say in who competes at international events — doing so would be the end of world sports.

There's a 70% chance that USA will top the Olympic Medal Table at Paris 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Japan Approves Plan to Open its First Casino

The Facts

  • A group that includes US-based MGM Resorts and Japan's Orix Corp. won approval from Japanese officials on Friday to build the country's first-ever casino, a 5.3 million-square-foot resort in the city of Osaka that's estimated to cost ¥1.08T ($8.2B) by 2029.

  • The resort — in which MGM and Orix will each have a 40% stake, with the other 20% divided among local companies — will include a hotel, conference center, shopping mall, and museum.

  • Casinos were illegal in Japan until a 2018 law gave exceptions for games like poker and baccarat. While opponents claim it will lead to more gambling addiction, the Liberal Democratic Party has claimed it will boost tourism, with the Osaka resort projected to attract 6M international and 14M domestic visitors annually.

The Spin

Narrative A

Japan should invest in business and job growth, but not to enrich casino corporations at the expense of its traditional culture and values. Companies always overestimate the financial gains resorts will bring to the economy, so those projections should be taken with a grain of salt. Besides, any potential economic growth won't outweigh the costs of organized crime and gambling addiction that the majority of Japanese citizens have expressed concerns over time and time again.

Narrative B

Osaka was one of only two prefectures to submit a bid for this resort, which means the city desperately wants to add the newly-legalized casino business to its economy. Its residents — who approve of the casino far more than they disapprove — have every right to welcome new economic opportunities to their city. Japan has been looking to boost its tourism economy for some time, and now that they have investors, that goal shouldn't be hindered just because other parts of the country oppose it.

Yemen’s Houthis, Saudi Arabia Exchange Hundreds of Prisoners

The Facts

  • The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Friday that Yemen's Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia agreed to exchange about 900 prisoners over the next three days, adding that 318 detainees had already flown between the Houthi-held capital, Sanaa, and government-held Aden, as peace talks between the two sides continue.

  • ICRC, which is managing the prisoner exchange, also said that its planes would be used to carry the released detainees between six cities in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

  • The Houthis are expected to release over 180 prisoners, including top Yemeni military officials, four Yemeni journalists, and Saudi and Sudanese fighters, according to the Associated Press, which also reported that the Saudi-led coalition and the Yemeni government would, in turn, release over 700 Houthi prisoners.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The Houthis have continued to threaten peace and security in Yemen since they launched their coup in 2014. However, through mediation and compromise, an agreement can be made if the Houthis and their Iranian backers are willing to compromise and allow the country to enjoy peace. Saudi Arabia is surely willing to compromise and, in fact, has always been willing to help bring peace to the impoverished Arab nation, but Iranian meddling hasn't helped the situation. Ultimately, the conflict can only end in a political settlement.

Establishment-critical narrative

It's the Yemeni government and its powerful Gulf allies who have obstructed peace in Yemen and continue to punish its citizens for standing up for themselves. But ultimately, a political process is likely the best way to end the war at this stage in the conflict. The Houthis have shown in the past that they are willing to take good-faith actions for peace, and releasing prisoners clearly demonstrates this desire. Hopefully, with good mediation, this war of aggression can finally come to an end.

Fla. Gov. DeSantis Signs 6-Week Abortion Ban

Photo: axios

The Facts

  • On Thursday, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill to ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

  • The signature followed closely behind the state Senate's approval in a 26-13 vote. The state House had passed it 70-40 earlier this month.

  • The Heartbeat Protection Act contains exceptions, including in the cases of rape or incest for up to 15 weeks if documentation is provided, and to protect the life of the mother.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

DeSantis continues to describe Florida as a "citadel of freedom,” but in reality, he’s waging war on freedom of the press, free enterprise, academic freedom, and reproductive freedom. DeSantis is considering running for president, but if his continued restrictive policies are anything to go by, he will struggle considerably to gain the support of a majority of Americans.

Republican narrative

DeSantis has fulfilled his promise to defend life in Florida, while this bill also allocates an extra $25M in funds for pregnancy centers around the state. Together with pro-life lawmakers and advocates, DeSantis has expanded the protection of unborn children and provided help to mothers across the state, proving that DeSantis gets things done.

Nerd narrative

There's a 5% chance that elective abortion will be banned nationally in the United States before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Deposed for Seven Hours in NY Civil Suit

Photo: dailymail

The Facts

  • On Thursday, former US Pres. Donald Trump was deposed for close to seven hours as part of Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil lawsuit over fraud allegations against Trump and his family.

  • James’ suit claims the Trump family provided false information about Trump’s net worth and the value of assets, including hotels and golf courses, to mislead Trump Organization banks and business partners.

  • James is seeking $250M in damages, the amount she believes Trump profited from the fraud. She also wants to ban the Trump family from doing business in the state of New York.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Trump has nothing to hide, and he just proved it by withstanding a seven-hour grilling and describing his years of business success to a hostile attorney general’s office on a political witch hunt. Like every other ongoing investigation into the former president’s business and political actions, this civil case is ridiculous, and Trump is destined to prevail.

Democratic narrative

We don’t know for sure if Trump actually testified instead of pleading the Fifth this time around, but if he did, his brashness might have dug him into a deeper hole. Juries in civil cases are allowed to use cases of defendants using the Fifth Amendment against them. And now anything he might’ve said in his deposition could be used in a future criminal case over the alleged business fraud. This wasn’t the decision of a business genius.

Nerd narrative

There’s a 33% chance Trump will be jailed or incarcerated before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Texas Dairy Farm Explosion Kills Over 18K Cows

The Facts

  • A massive explosion and fire at the South Fork Dairy in west Texas killed more than 18K cows and left one person critically injured Monday evening, Castro County authorities said Thursday.

  • The cows — each reportedly valued at $2K — were huddled together in a holding pen, waiting to be milked, when the explosion occurred.

  • Most of the cows were a mix of Holstein and Jersey breeds, representing approximately 90% of the farm’s herd.

The Spin

Narrative A

It is hard to imagine anything worse than being burned alive. Ironically, there are no federal regulations protecting animals from fires that kill hundreds of thousands of farm animals each year. Until the government makes laws to prevent barn fires, farms must do more to protect animals by adopting common sense fire safety measures, including having access to fire extinguishers and completing annual fire safety training.

Narrative B

Local authorities are investigating this tragedy and for good reason. Besides a catastrophic loss of animal life, there are now serious environmental and health issues caused by the number of dead cattle, including potential run-off into the Brazos River Basin. This is another industrial accident in the US with potential cascading consequences for ecosystems and nearby communities.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that at least 33.5M commercial cattle will be slaughtered in the US in 2032 if the lowest retail price of clean meat in 2026 is between $8 and $20 per kg, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

French Constitutional Council Upholds Macron's Pension Plan

Photo: nbc

The Facts

  • On Friday, France’s Constitutional Council approved a plan to raise the retirement age to 64, in a victory for Pres. Emmanuel Macron after three months of mass protests over the legislation.

  • Protesters gathered outside Paris City Hall, with most chanting peacefully while some set a garbage bin on fire. Unions and Macron’s political opponents vowed to maintain pressure on the government to withdraw the bill, and activists threatened further protests for Saturday.

  • The Council also rejected calls for a referendum but struck down some of the reforms, citing legal flaws, including a so-called "senior index" aimed at urging companies with more than 1K employees to hire workers over 55.

The Spin

Narrative A

Macron is aware of the political backlash that his pension plan brings, but he's standing firm and making difficult decisions to secure France’s future. He has also reached out to opponents to hear their concerns, but they have refused to engage in dialogue, using this to divide France and cause trouble as Macron attempts to protect pensions long-term.

Narrative B

Macron’s government has defied the will of the French people, and it should have fallen. The grassroots support shows how much Macron’s constituents oppose his policy, and to make matters worse, he used undemocratic means to advance his unpopular pension reform. French democracy looks more like a farce each day, and Macron’s government doesn't represent the people.
