British Columbia Sues OpenAI Over School Shooting Warnings

British Columbia Sues OpenAI Over School Shooting Warnings

The Facts

  • British Columbia filed a lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco against OpenAI and Chief Executive Sam Altman over the Feb. 10 mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, alleging the company failed to alert police to threats.

  • The attack killed eight victims, including five students aged 12 and 13, an educational assistant and the shooter's mother and sibling. The 18-year-old attacker, Jesse Van Rootselaar, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

  • The suit says OpenAI's automated monitoring flagged the shooter's account in June 2025, and a human review team found a "credible specific risk of harm to others," but leadership rejected a referral to police and instead deactivated the account.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Eight people died in Tumbler Ridge after warning signs showed up in ChatGPT conversations serious enough to trigger an internal review, and police were never told. Companies that profit from AI have a duty to pick up the phone when credible threats of mass violence cross their servers. The courts held tobacco and opioid makers accountable, and OpenAI should be next.

Pro-industry narrative

OpenAI's chief executive has already issued a public apology to Tumbler Ridge, admitted it failed to alert law enforcement and committed to working with every level of government to prevent a repeat. He also called for a federal safety framework and assured the public that OpenAI will do the right thing. A lawsuit in California courts does less for Canadian safety than that kind of direct cooperation.

Industry-critical narrative

This case shows why voluntary safety isn't enough. OpenAI's role should be limited, not police-like, and accountability cannot stop with OpenAI. Government and law enforcement also failed to provide timely transparency around the Tumbler Ridge shooting and whether existing safeguards worked. Families also deserve transparency about whether AI contributed to the attack.

Nerd narrative

There's a 43% chance that there will be a positive transition to a world with radically smarter-than-human artificial intelligence, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

UK to Refuel Saudi Jets as Houthi Attacks Escalate

UK to Refuel Saudi Jets as Houthi Attacks Escalate

The Facts

  • British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Monday he had approved a Saudi request for "defensive air-to-air refuelling" after Yemen's Houthi forces stepped up missile and drone attacks on the kingdom.

  • Burnham said he agreed to the request on the advice of Defense Secretary Wes Streeting and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, and described the arrangement as "time-limited" and subject to regular review.

  • The mission will involve a single Royal Air Force Voyager aircraft based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and will begin in a few days. The Voyager is part of the RAF's core fleet of nine aircraft.

The Spin

Government-critical narrative

One tanker won't change the military math, so the real story is the precedent being set. Signing off on air-to-air refueling drops British personnel straight into the support chain of an active Middle East war, and first steps make second steps easier. Once Riyadh asks for more, the line drawn at refueling gets awfully hard to hold.

Pro-government narrative

Saudi Arabia is under attack and a shipping lane the whole world depends on is under threat, so answering a request for defensive refueling is simply responsible leadership. The support is defensive, time-limited and kept under review. Keeping the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Strait of Hormuz open protects British trade and regional stability.

Burnham Meets Trump to Discuss AI, Geopolitics

Burnham Meets Trump to Discuss AI, Geopolitics

The Facts

  • U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham met with U.S. President Donald Trump for the first time Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where they discussed the U.K.'s Chagos Islands deal, the Middle East, AI and more.

  • Regarding the U.K.'s decision to give the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, including Diego Garcia island, where the U.S. shares a military base, Trump called the deal "terrible" and said he thinks Burnham will look into it. In response, Burnham said, "Yep."

  • On Israel, some reports claimed Trump appeared surprised to hear about the U.K.'s decision to sanction Israeli settlements, while others stated he ignored the topic. He reportedly also paid little attention to Burnham's comments on sanctioning Israeli settlements and his promotion of legal immigration.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Teaming up with the U.S. on AI defense is more than necessary as AI now sits at the heart of national security. Linking up U.K. and U.S. defense AI outfits to shield infrastructure from maritime routes to airspace sends a real message to adversaries. As for Trump's apparent boredom on all other issues, it seems that the U.S. president has softened his tone in the face of the new calm, crafty prime minister.

Government-critical narrative

A shiny tech pact is a distraction from a trip in which Britain turns up empty-handed, with no state visit left to dangle, no plan to hit the 3.5% defense pledge and a president casually musing about a united Ireland. Voters are already deeply pessimistic about AI and want serious regulation. Hopefully, Burnham will make at least one smart move by acting on his apparent consideration of revoking the disastrous Chagos deal.

Nerd narrative

There is a 35% chance the U.K. will have a Labour Prime Minister on Jan. 1, 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

California's Racial Bias Trial Against Tesla Opens

California's Racial Bias Trial Against Tesla Opens

The Facts

  • Opening statements began Monday in Oakland in California's racial discrimination case against Tesla. The state claims that Black workers at the Fremont plant faced slurs, segregation and unequal pay. The trial is scheduled to run through Oct. 30.

  • California Civil Rights Department attorney Brett Watson showed the court photographs of graffiti found at the Fremont factory, including the N-word, swastikas, a Confederate flag and messages telling Black workers to "go back to Africa."

  • Tesla attorney Tyree Jones said in his opening statement that the state lacks evidence that racial harassment was "standard operating procedure," and argued that the case "attacks the way many Black people greet each other."

The Spin

Narrative A

Tesla ran a racially segregated factory where Black workers got hit with slurs, swastikas and graffiti while getting stuck in the lowest rungs of the workforce. Hundreds of worker complaints and a nearly three-year state investigation found discrimination in pay, promotions, discipline and job assignments. Turning a blind eye for years is a choice, and accountability is overdue.

Narrative B

These are unproven allegations from a 2022 filing that took years just to reach a courtroom, and nothing has been established as fact. Tesla does not tolerate discrimination and has fired workers caught committing misconduct. The same judge already refused to let more than 6,000 workers sue as a class, and a separate $137 million verdict was reduced — the claims keep shrinking under scrutiny.

Nerd narrative

There's a 1% chance that Tesla will become the largest car company in the world (by sales) before 2035, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Clancy Defense Seeks Probe of Lone Holdout Juror

Clancy Defense Seeks Probe of Lone Holdout Juror

The Facts

  • Lindsay Clancy's lawyer, Kevin Reddington, asked a Massachusetts judge to investigate the lone juror who wanted to convict her, questioning his alleged cellphone use during deliberations and his truthfulness on the pretrial juror questionnaire.

  • The motion, filed Friday and made public Monday, seeks records of any calls or texts juror Michael Desronvil made between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. local time on each day the jury deliberated. Phone use during deliberations is prohibited in Massachusetts.

  • In a separate motion filed Monday, attorney Martin Weinberg asked the judge to dismiss the case rather than hold a retrial, arguing that a second trial would violate double-jeopardy rights because the mistrial should not have been declared.

The Spin

Narrative A

One juror stood his ground through plus hours of deliberations, got talked over and still refused to bless a fairy tale about a mother who killed three kids. Now the defense wants his phone records, his sealed questionnaire and him hauled in for questioning. Jurors who vote their conscience should never be hunted like this.

Narrative B

A juror who allegedly grabbed his wife by the throat, had an active restraining order taken out by his teenage nephew and faced a criminal charge should never have made it onto this jury. Massachusetts questionnaires ask directly about arrests, charges, and court orders, and lying on one is a crime. A hearing into whether the truth was told is exactly what the law allows.

Infantino Proposes Independent Review of FIFA Governance

Infantino Proposes Independent Review of FIFA Governance

The Facts

  • FIFA President Gianni Infantino wrote to the FIFA Council and the presidents of all 211 member associations Monday, proposing an independent external review of the governing body's governance framework for major strategic initiatives.

  • Infantino's proposal is a direct, structured and time-limited consultation with confederations, member associations and stakeholders on strengthening decision-making, including the roles of the president, Bureau, Council and Congress.

  • Suggestions received before the FIFA Council meeting set for Oct. 15 can be discussed at that session, and later written submissions will also be considered. Any resulting changes to FIFA's statutes would require approval from Congress.

The Spin

Narrative A

Infantino deserves credit for scrapping a divisive proposal before approval and opening FIFA's system to an independent review. Structured consultation with all 211 associations can fix weak processes without sacrificing the goal of generating more money for soccer. Reform, not resignation, is the responsible course.

Narrative B

Infantino's review proposal is too little, too late. A bid to sell 20% of FIFA's commercial rights without full institutional scrutiny exposed a leadership failure, while FIFA's $6 billion reserve offered a cleaner path to fund development. Real accountability requires independent oversight and governance reform with teeth.

EU Delists Russian Businessmen From Sanction List

EU Delists Russian Businessmen From Sanction List

The Facts

  • Latvia on Tuesday dropped its opposition to an EU compromise that would renew sanctions on roughly 3,000 Russia-linked individuals and entities for three years while delisting billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman.

  • Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs said a 36-month extension "would be the right step" but that the delisting could not be the price. A spokesperson for the European Council Presidency said a "difficult compromise" had been reached in exchange for the extension.

  • The measures, consisting of asset freezes and travel bans, would have expired at midnight Tuesday unless all 27 member states agreed unanimously to renew them. The listings had already been extended by seven days after an earlier Sept. 15 deadline.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Delisting Usmanov and Fridman while Russian missiles and drones pound Ukrainian cities hands Moscow a victory it never earned. Sanctions lists aren't arbitrary — every name on them is tied to the money and power that keep this war going. Escalation deserves tougher restrictions, and any country with a spine should slap on national sanctions the moment Brussels goes wobbly.

Establishment-critical narrative

These sanctions were never a legal judgment — no trial, no verdict, just bureaucrats freezing bank accounts and erasing livelihoods by decree. Courts have already found some of the accusations false, yet the Council simply relists people with fresh wording and restarts the ordeal. Lifting them on Usmanov and Fridman is overdue, and the whole extralegal regime should follow.

White House Debuts 'Trump TV' Livestream After Press Bans

White House Debuts 'Trump TV' Livestream After Press Bans

The Facts

  • The White House launched a 24/7 YouTube livestream called "Trump TV: The Essentials Station" at 7 p.m. ET on Monday, days after President Donald Trump barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.

  • The stream opened with a rerun of a July 3 speech Trump gave at Mount Rushmore. By Tuesday morning it was airing a March 11 speech at a packaging facility in Hebron, Kentucky, and other archived events featuring Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

  • Kaelan Dorr, a deputy assistant to the president, described the channel as "a 24/7 livestream of the Administration's greatest hits, unfiltered," saying the press had at times reported inaccurately or not at all on the administration's record.

The Spin

Anti-Trump narrative

Banning independent reporters from the White House and then spinning up a government-run YouTube channel is authoritarian stagecraft from a failed president. Calling it "Trump TV" doesn't change the fact that it's propaganda paid for with taxpayer money. And the ratings tell the story a few thousand viewers watching an day-old Mount Rushmore rerun is not a substitute for real coverage.

Pro-Trump narrative

For years legacy outlets acted like the official narrator of the presidency, editing and framing every word before Americans ever heard it. A White House livestream of speeches and events cuts out that middleman and lets people judge for themselves, which is the opposite of "state media." Outlets that spent years distorting coverage have no standing to complain about losing the microphone.

Trump at UN: Iran Deal or 'Annihilation'

Trump at UN: Iran Deal or 'Annihilation'

The Facts

  • Speaking to the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he faces a "big decision" on Iran: reaching a deal that would let it rebuild, or annihilating the Islamic Republic "quickly."

  • Trump predicted an agreement with Tehran would come after the Nov. 3 midterm elections, saying that Iranian leaders were waiting to see how he performed at the polls. He added that he's not running and that the vote "doesn't even enter my mind."

  • A CNN/SSRS poll released Tuesday found 71% of voters disapprove of Trump's handling of foreign affairs and 76% said that the Iran war was not worth its cost in American lives and money. Nearly two-thirds said the U.S. is not winning the conflict.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Trump's speech — possibly the greatest ever delivered by any leader at the U.N. — showed how the United States' strategy of peace through strength works. Iran has finally heard it plainly take a deal or face the consequences. A regime that has spent decades funding terrorists and chasing nuclear weapons responds only to force. Defending sovereign nations and giving Iran a real path to prosperity is bold leadership.

Anti-Trump narrative

Standing at the U.N. podium and threatening to annihilate a nation of 90 million people is a genocidal threat. Pair that with Trump's bogus boasts about ending wars, deadly boat strikes with no evidence and a laundry list of fabrications, and American credibility has taken a beating in front of the entire world. Trump continues to embarrass the U.S. on the world stage every time he opens his mouth.

Pro-Iran narrative

Iran will continue to stand in defiance of Trump's threats, drawing on decades of hard-won resilience. A nation that once fought with rationed artillery shells and barbed wire shortages has transformed itself into a military power capable of striking any target without limitation. Iran will not surrender across any domain of warfare. Should negotiations come, Tehran will convert battlefield strength into political gains.

Nerd narrative

There's a 30% chance that the United States will carry out sustained or high-intensity attacks against Iran in 2028, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

El Niño Hits Record Strength Weeks Before Expected Peak

El Niño Hits Record Strength Weeks Before Expected Peak

The Facts

  • Sea surface temperatures in the central-eastern Pacific's Niño 3.4 region reached 3.05 degrees Celsius above average Saturday, surpassing the record of 3.02 degrees Celsius set in November 2015 and making the current El Niño the strongest on record.

  • Adam Scaife, head of long range prediction at the U.K. Met Office, said the record was exceeded "with several weeks to go before it peaks later this year." Forecasters expect the event to peak in November or December, with some projections near 4 degrees Celsius.

  • NOAA's Climate Prediction Center puts the odds at 75% that the October-December period will exceed the strength of any El Niño since 1950, using a relative index that filters out background ocean warming. That measure has not yet set a record.

The Spin

Climate-concerned narrative

This Super El Niño has smashed a year record two months before it even peaks, and every model says it keeps climbing. Stacked on top of human-caused warming, that means fiercer floods, deeper droughts and hotter heat waves worldwide. Preparation and forecasting can blunt the damage, but cutting greenhouse gas emissions is the only real fix in what may be the superlative El Niño of the modern era.

Climate-skeptic narrative

El Niño is a natural ocean cycle that has been swinging the Pacific for thousands of years, long before a single coal plant existed, and there is no evidence emissions make these events stronger or more frequent. "Super El Nino" isn't even a real scientific category — it's a media label built to sell panic. Forecasters admit the uncertainty is huge, yet the headlines keep selling certainty.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that the average global surface air temperature relative to the pre-industrial baseline will be at least 1.49 °C in 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
