    The Facts

    • An explosion claimed by Islamic State targeted a Shi'ite mosque in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif on Thurs., killing at least 16 people and injuring 58. Another blast in Kunduz caused at least 20 more casualties, and another in Kabul wounded 3, including a child.

    • An Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman said the roadside blast in Kunduz targeted a van of military mechanics, and school students were among the wounded.

    The Spin

    Republican narrative

The current security situation in Afghanistan is a direct result of the Biden administration's decision to withdraw from the country. Ethnic and religious minorities are now being slaughtered by extremists because Biden thought it would be politically expedient to abandon longstanding allies.

    Democratic narrative

The US's disastrous invasion and occupation of the country, not Biden's withdrawal, are to blame for the current security crisis. The fact that Afghan security forces collapsed following the US withdrawal indicates that the security situation was simply unsustainable, making attacks like this one, unfortunately, inevitable.
