The Facts

  • Following a 2-5 start to the 2022-23 NBA season, the Brooklyn Nets fired head coach Steve Nash in an announcement Tuesday morning, with assistant coach Jacque Vaughn serving as interim coach starting Tuesday night.

  • Nash, who went 94-69 during his more than two years with the team, will reportedly be replaced by suspended Celtics coach Ime Udoka, who shares the title of former San Antonio Spurs assistant coach with Nets General Manager Sean Marks.

The Spin

Narrative A

While Nash tried his best to take on one of the most bizarre team atmospheres imaginable, he shouldn't have to deal with the circus known as the Brooklyn Nets. He comes from a different generation — one in which you play through broken bones and big egos — and the players he was in charge of simply don't compare.

Narrative B

Nash's firing was inevitable, though the timing is still mysteriously late. The Nets should've fired him after Durant first requested a trade over the summer, but they waited for the team to start the season at 2-5 and Nash to blow a fuse in a game against the Bucks. His coaching clearly wasn't working, and now the team is facing an uphill battle.
