US says China’s support for Russia over Ukraine puts it on ‘wrong side of history’

Chinese Pres. Xi Jinping reaffirmed his support for the Kremlin in a phone call with Vladimir Putin on Wed., committing himself to "mutual support with Russia" on key issues including "sovereignty and security."
According to the Kremlin, Xi further remarked on the "legitimacy" of actions taken by Moscow in pursuit of its national interests, which he reportedly argued had been prompted by external forces.
By supporting Russia in its illegal invasion of Ukraine, China is damaging its ties with the West and will stand on the wrong side of history. China needs to reevaluate its position or risk one day facing the same sanctions and severing of ties that Russia has experienced.
China's continuing relationship with Russia is reflective of both countries' desires for a fairer and more equitable world order, including on sovereignty and security, in contrast to a global hegemon dictating the rules of everything.
There's a 12% chance that China will get involved in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict by 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
