The Facts

  • Russia's Ministry of Defense have condemned an attack on a Russian military training area that took place on Saturday in the Belgorod region that borders Ukraine. At least 11 were killed and 15 others were wounded by two gunmen in what has been described by the Russian MoD as a 'terrorist' attack.

  • The assailants – who were allegedly from a former Soviet republic – opened fire on volunteer forces during a firearms training session: "The terrorists opened fire with small arms on the personnel of the unit," according to the defense ministry.

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after an election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.

Pro-Russia narrative

NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.

Nerd narrative

There's a 1% chance that Kyiv will be under Russian control before 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
