The Facts

  • Ukrainian state media has reported that high-profile businessman Oleksiy Vadatursky and his wife have been killed in a "massive" Russian shelling of the city of Mykolaiv. Vadatursky was the owner of Nibulon, a group engaged in exporting grain.

  • President Zelenskyy on late Sat. also urged a mandatory civilian evacuation from combat zones in the eastern Donetsk region. On Telegram, Zelenskyy described hundreds of thousands of civilians remaining and pled "Many refuse to leave... But it really needs to be done...Leave, we will help."

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after an election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.

Pro-Russia narrative

NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.

Nerd narrative

There's a 35% chance that there will be a large-scale armed conflict in Russia before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
