How Russia’s attack on Ukraine violates international law

At least 1 person was killed and 5 more were injured as Russia shelled the northeastern city of Kharkiv – Ukraine's second largest – a regional military administration said on Telegram on Saturday.
Russia's defense ministry claimed to have struck 389 military targets overnight, including 35 command posts and 4 fuel and ammunition depots. The reports couldn't be independently confirmed.
This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.
NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking their promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided tragedy in Ukraine.
There is a 30% chance that Ukraine will receive a security guarantee from another country before 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
