    The Facts

    • On Tues., the EU reached an agreement requiring all cellphones and handheld electronic devices to have a USB-C charging port.

    • This is reportedly part of a wider effort to cut down on electronic waste and make the 27-nation bloc more sustainable. A universal charger could lead to fewer carbon dioxide emissions, and reduce the number of disposed chargers.

    The Spin

    Narrative A

This is a common-sense victory for the environment and for consumer convenience. As for Apple, it already has USB-C ports on many of its devices. It's time for the tech giant to stop being defiant and fully switch over.

    Narrative B

This might be more convenient for consumers, but it remains to be seen whether it'll save people money. When new iPhones are released, older versions are usually discounted, allowing many consumers to opt for cheaper versions. Banning devices without USB-C charging ports could eliminate that option.
