All US federal prisons have been locked down after two inmates were killed in an altercation in the Beaumont penitentiary in Texas late Monday night.
Two other inmates were hospitalized. No staff were injured.
The whole US justice system needs systemic reforms. Powerful gangs inflict violence on enemies and their associates undeterred, while prisons are beset with abuse and corruption that allow killings like this to occur.
While corruption is an issue, the bigger problems are staff shortages and lax prison security, which have enabled not only violence but also a worrying number of recent prisoner escapes.
