On Fri., Utah legislature overrode Gov. Spencer Cox's veto of a ban that prevents transgender students from participating in girl's sports.
Cox's attempt to overrule the bill on Tues. came a day after Gov. Eric Holcomb vetoed a similar ban in Indiana, citing likely court challenges.
The governors' decisions should've been celebrated. There is no place for discrimination in the law and these bans unfairly target transgender youth. Both Cox and Holcomb rightly chose compassion where other GOP lawmakers have been motivated by transphobia.
Allowing biological males with years of testosterone-enhanced capability to compete in women's sports simply because they identify as female is disrespectful towards both biologically female competitors and the sport itself. It was clear the vetoes would never hold up.
