The Facts

  • On Thu., Republican Louisiana state legislator Danny McCormick withdrew a proposed bill to classify abortion as homicide after House members voted 65-26 to amend it.

  • The bill was introduced two days after a leaked draft ruling suggested that SCOTUS is poised to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

The Spin

Left narrative

This bill would've targeted some of the state's most vulnerable, and lead to devastating consequences reaching far beyond women's rights; it would've called on judges and law enforcement to simply ignore federal rulings, violating the separation of powers principles.

Right narrative

Nobody should be denied equal protection under the law - including unborn babies. The proposed legislation would've accomplished this and protected the most vulnerable; the resistance by even some supposed "pro-life" legislators is disconcerting.

Nerd narrative

There's a 90% chance that Roe v. Wade will be overturned before 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
