US authorities have discovered an underground smuggling tunnel near San Diego's Otay Mesa border crossing. It reportedly runs about the length of six football fields and contains reinforced walls, electricity, ventilation, and a rail system.
According to authorities, the tunnel connects a house in Tijuana to a warehouse in an industrial area in San Diego. Several other sophisticated tunnels have been located in this area in the last two decades.
This discovery should be a wake-up call for DC lawmakers to pass legislation to combat the urgent crisis at the US southern border. Democrats are dragging their feet and have consistently refused to address this major problem, and until they do, the crime wave will continue.
Though Republicans may have you believe that border protection policies will increase security, they simply won't. This tunnel was built in one of the most fortified stretches of the border, and policies are no match for sophisticated passages that smugglers have been using for years. More effective approaches are required.
