    The Facts

    • Shehbaz Sharif, a leading opposition figure and younger brother of former PM Nawaz Sharif, won Parliament's support on Mon. to become Pakistan's new PM. He will now form a government that can remain in place until elections are held in Aug. 2023.

    • This comes after Pakistan's political opposition removed former PM Imran Khan in a no-confidence vote on Sun. Khan is the nation's first PM to be removed by such a vote.

    The Spin

    Pro-establishment narrative

Shehbaz is the right choice for Pakistan. He's an experienced politician who will be able to lead the country through its current political and economic crisis. Unlike Khan, he knows how to deal with other political parties and red tape in order to bring prosperity to the nation and help the people.

    Establishment-critical narrative

Khan's ousting was a Western conspiracy. The US has a long history of foreign meddling, especially in Muslim countries, and this latest move is likely a response to Khan seeking an independent foreign policy and not supporting the West's war effort against Russia.
