P&O Ferries has faced outrage for firing 800 employees simultaneously, via a video call on Thursday.
Employees were given no prior notice of their job termination and customers have been warned to expect significant disruption to P&O in the following days.
P&O are bringing themselves into line with standard industry practice. They've offered enhanced severance to those affected by the move and all affected crew who were working at the time of termination were notified in person.
P&O have acted shamefully, creating suffering and uncertainty in the lives of loyal crew members, some of whom have worked for the company for decades. Their failure to consult or forewarn unions of their intended actions may even have been illegal and will certainly wreak major damage on local communities that depend on the company for their livelihoods.
