The Facts

  • Poland has appraised the cost of German intervention in the country during World War II at 6.2 trillion zlotys ($1.32 trillion) and has announced its plan to officially demand reparations from Berlin.

  • The comments were made on Thurs. by the leader of Poland's governing Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski. The party has frequently called for compensation since it took power in 2015, but Poland hasn't officially demanded reparations.

The Spin

Narrative A

Poland was the first victim of World War II and therefore suffered tremendously. The country has never fully been compensated for this tragedy and exploitation, and it is only fair that Germany pays reparations.

Narrative B

Poland and the rest of the eastern bloc countries that suffered during WWII have been fairly compensated for the war and do not deserve any more reparations. The war happened nearly 80 years ago and these issues are better off being left in the past.
