    The Facts

    • Albuquerque, N.M. police have arrested Muhammad Syed, a 51-year-old originally from Afghanistan, and charged him with two of this summer's murders of Muslim men in the city. Police said he is also a suspect in two other murders of Muslim men that have taken place in the past 10 months.

    • Police said Syed, a Sunni Muslim, was arrested at a traffic stop after a tip from the city's Muslim community pointed them in his direction. All four victims were Shiite Muslims.

    The Spin

    Left narrative

Although these horrific killings have rattled the Muslim community, law enforcement has taken swift action to get to the bottom of its investigation, and members of the community – both Sunni and Shiite – came together to support each other. It's a tremendous relief to have some clarity in this disturbing case.

    Right narrative

The mainstream media and some left-leaning activist groups jumped to conclusions about these being racially-motivated murders. There was no information at the time on a suspect nor a motive. Such rash speculation was highly irresponsible, especially given these new developments.
