Report: Former UK Ambassador to Myanmar Detained in Yangon

The Facts

Vicky Bowman, UK ambassador to Myanmar from 2002-2006, was reportedly arrested on Wed. along with her husband, artist and former political prisoner Ko Htein Lin, in Yangon.

On Thurs., Myanmar's military junta stated that Bowman violated the country's Immigration Act by failing to apply for a change of address on her visa. Her husband was charged with encouraging her to break the law by moving to his home. A hearing has been set for Sept. 6.

Bowman had served in the British embassy in Myanmar as second secretary from 1990 to 1993 before returning to be ambassador. Currently, she runs the Myanmar Center for Responsible Business.

This comes as the UK Foreign Office announced on Wed. new economic sanctions against companies linked to Myanmar's junta, and its formal support to an International Court of Justice case regarding the alleged genocide of the Rohingya community.

Bowman joins Australian economist Sean Turnell and Japanese filmmaker Toru Kubota as the latest foreigner to be arrested in Myanmar. More than 12K people are reportedly detained in the country, though the junta disputes this.

The Insein Prison, where the couple are currently being held and could potentially face five years, is notorious for prisoners allegedly being beaten and starved, as well as containing diseases and rats.
