    The Facts

    • In a recently declassified letter, Sens. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) have alleged a secret CIA mass surveillance program that for years has been collecting data on Americans, without warrants.

    • The CIA is prohibited from engaging in domestic activities, with rules tightened after Edward Snowden's leaks, but sometimes unintentionally "scoops up" American data during operations.

    The Spin

    Establishment-critical narrative

These allegations raise serious questions about the CIA's spying on Americans. What "incidental" information of ours is the CIA scooping up in bulk? This massive invasion of our privacy must stop.

    Pro-establishment narrative

The CIA takes privacy and civil liberties very seriously. The information was declassified in an effort to be transparent. All data collection is conducted in compliance with the law.

    Narrative C

Edward Snowden is vindicated once again. It's been almost a decade since he blew the whistle on the NSA, and stricter intelligence oversight laws were supposed to tighten this up. But the CIA plays outside of these laws and the government shows us time and again that it doesn't deserve our benefit of the doubt.
