    The Facts

    • In a court filing on Mon., Special Counsel John Durham released a text message sent in Sep. 2016 by Michael A. Sussmann, a lawyer for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, to former FBI General Counsel James Baker.

    • Sussmann, who is accused of lying to the FBI when he presented data that tied then-candidate Trump to a Russian bank, said he did so as a concerned citizen – not as a lawyer working for a client or political entity.

    The Spin

    Republican narrative

Clinton operatives, in league with big tech, concocted false information tying Trump to Russia and presented it to the FBI to discredit him ahead of the 2016 election. This is a scandal of Nixonian proportions and makes Watergate look like horseplay.

    Democratic narrative

Durham, appointed by AG William Barr in the Trump era, has repeatedly used court filings to air unproven conspiracies that the Clinton campaign was involved in a wide-ranging attempt to discredit Trump. He hasn't charged anyone with this however, and needs to be more careful with his assertions.
