US Soccer Journalist Dies While Covering Qatar World Cup

- Grant Wahl, a prominent American soccer journalist, died on Friday while covering the FIFA World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands in Qatar.[1]
- Eyewitnesses report that Wahl collapsed in the press box at Lusail Iconic Stadium during extra time. When emergency services failed to revive him, he was taken to Hamad General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.[1]
- While the cause of death is not yet known, Wahl had been unwell for ten days. He had visited a medical clinic in Qatar after complaints of discomfort in his upper chest, where he was treated for a suspected case of bronchitis.[2]
- Wahl, covering his eighth World Cup, celebrated his 48th birthday on Thursday, a day before he collapsed.[3]
- On Nov. 21, Wahl was reportedly denied entry to the US national team’s World Cup opener against Wales and was briefly detained by Qatari authorities for wearing a rainbow shirt in support of LGBTQ+ rights. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.[1]
- Wahl's brother announced his death on Instagram, alleging that foul play may have been involved. He has since taken his account private.[4]
