The Facts

  • On Thursday, Pres. Biden made his first major announcement on border security. He said that the US would immediately begin turning away Cubans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans who cross the US-Mexico border illegally.

  • The new border security rules expand upon an existing effort to prevent Venezuelans from entering the US. These changes to the immigration rules will continue even if the Supreme Court ends the Trump-era Title 42 public health law that allows the US to turn away asylum-seekers.

The Spin

Republican narrative

It’s "too little too late" for Joe Biden, who has shown he does not care about America’s border and the safety concerns mass illegal migration brings. Biden has had two years to continue the work former Pres. Trump accomplished keeping America safe — but Biden has ignored it and incentivized more people to flood into America. Now he’s acting as if he cares about the crisis he helped create.

Democratic narrative

Biden has had appealing rhetoric when it comes to immigrants' rights and moderate Democrats cite border security as an important platform. Unfortunately, a Trump-era policy rooted in xenophobia is still the template used to deny the basic right to asylum. As Biden prepares to visit the southern border, the White House and the Democratic party must listen to advocates and progressive allies to shape a more humane policy worthy of Biden's important legacy.
