The Facts

  • When House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was asked about climate change and forest fires during a visit to a natural gas drilling site in northeast Ohio, he pitched the idea of planting one trillion trees as part of a plan to address climate change.

  • McCarthy was visiting the site to promote House Republicans’ plan to increase domestic energy production and said, “We need to manage our forests better so our environment can be stronger,” as smoke from Canadian wildfires permeated the air.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Contrary to the mainstream narrative, conservatives and Republicans care deeply about the planet and are committed to a sustainable environmental policy that is pro-Earth and pro-civilization. The problem is that powerful special interests have taken over institutions to push an alarmist narrative that doesn’t even address the root problems. Bought-and-paid-for “scientists” and politicians don’t care about environmentalism at all, they’re just exploiting climate change to bring about their plans to further a left-leaning social and economic agenda.

Democratic narrative

The GOP is now pretending to care about climate change after decades of harmful rhetoric that has denied the existential threat of global warming. They may promote planting trees, but their unrealistic “plan” is just a straw man to deflect from a transition away from fossil fuels and strict emissions regulations. Plus, knowing the GOP, they’ll try to cut down the trees after they’ve been planted.

Nerd narrative

There is an 8% chance US greenhouse gas emissions will be halved by 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
