Plane Held in France Over Trafficking Concerns Lands in India

A Legend Airlines flight carrying 276 Indian nationals landed in Mumbai early on Tuesday after being grounded for four days in France over human trafficking and undocumented immigration concerns.

Upon arrival at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the passengers — mostly men — were reportedly interrogated by officials from the Immigration Department and the Central Bureau of Investigation.

As many as 25 passengers of the charter flight en route to Nicaragua — which stopped at France's Vatry airport for refueling after departing from UAE — were transferred to a special zone in Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport to process their asylum requests.

Though the Airlines claims that some of the 303 passengers on board were tourists, many people allegedly use the Central American country as a migratory springboard due to its relaxed visa-entry requirements.

According to The Times of India, Hyderabad-based Shashi Kiran Reddy could have been involved in arranging the charter flight. Last year, Reddy allegedly facilitated the illegal journey of an Indian family who froze to death in Canada's Manitoba while being smuggled into the US.
