The Facts

An assault rifle attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran on Friday left the head of security dead and two other guards injured, prompting Azerbaijan to evacuate its diplomatic personnel.

The report suggested that the attacker was disgruntled that the embassy did not respond to his inquiries.

The incident comes as tensions between the two nations have escalated in recent months over Iran’s treatment of its Azeri minority population and over Azerbaijan’s recent decision to appoint an ambassador to Israel.
