The Facts

  • Swiss watchmaker Swatch Group has sued the Malaysian government for its seizure of 172 "Pride collection" rainbow-colored watches from 16 outlets. The lawsuit was filed on June 24 but was not covered by the media until Monday when the local press reported the story.

  • The suit — an application for judicial review with the High Court seeking to nullify the seizure and claim damages — alleges Malaysian authorities confiscated £11k (~$14.3k) worth of watches. It argues that "the acronym ‘LGBTQIA2S+’ are not banned words in Malaysia."

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Malaysia has a dangerous track record regarding its treatment of LGBTQ people. From 20-year jail sentences for sodomy to anti-scientific "rehabilitation retreats," the government makes life incredibly difficult for those who don't conform to strict, traditional Islamic teachings on sexuality. If the current regime continues its crackdown on even the smallest pro-LGBTQ symbols like rainbows, Malaysia's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and gender non-conforming communities will never receive the basic human rights that they deserve.

Establishment-critical narrative

Don't be fooled by calls from Western institutions to promote "inclusivity" in the developing world. Countries like Canada and Australia, using the UN as their Trojan horse, disregard traditional parental rights when teaching children about sex — not "sexuality" — in their international programs. Non-Western nations have different beliefs, and, more importantly, don't have the time or resources to be worrying about radical Western sexuality curricula.
