• With his eye on the 2024 election, former Pres. Trump is seeking to regain access to his Facebook account, which has been suspended for two years. Trump’s campaign has reportedly sent a formal petition to Facebook’s parent company Meta asking it to unblock his account.^[1]
• Trump was banned from Twitter and Facebook following the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots, with Twitter rendering a permanent suspension while Facebook said it would review Trump’s account in two years. New Twitter CEO Elon Musk reinstated Trump’s account last November.^[2]
• With his two-year review coming up, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said the company will render a decision on the former president’s account in the coming weeks. Trump’s campaign wrote a letter asking his account be reinstated on grounds of free speech and open political discourse.^[3]
• The campaign argued that maintaining Trump’s ban would constitute "an inappropriate interference in the American political and election process," given that he is a political candidate.^[4]
• People close to Trump say he is "probably" coming back to Twitter but has been seeking advice on his social media strategy. He has not tweeted since he was reinstated two months ago.^[1]
• After being suspended from the major platforms, Trump started using his own website, Truth Social, though he had far greater reach on Twitter and Facebook — 88M and 34M followers respectively — compared to 4.8M on his platform.^[5]
