The Spin

Republican narrative

Johnson's delay in swearing in Grijalva is completely justified because of the government shutdown and House procedures. Johnson has publicly acknowledged her election victory and committed to administering the oath once Congress reconvenes. Mayes is pulling a shameless publicity stunt to grab national attention.

Democratic narrative

Johnson is brazenly disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of Arizona voters by refusing to seat their duly elected representative. He has sworn in Republicans during pro-forma sessions but won't do the same for a Democrat. This is taxation without representation — the very injustice that sparked the American Revolution.
