The Facts

  • Blue Origin, the Jeff Bezos-owned space company, canceled the launch of its New Glenn rocket on Sunday due to adverse weather conditions, one day before new federal restrictions on commercial space launches took effect.
  • The commercial space company delayed the launch twice, from 2:45 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) to 3:18 p.m. EST and then 4:12 p.m. EST, before calling it off altogether due to the "cumulus cloud rule."
  • The NG-2 mission was due to carry NASA's ESCAPADE probes, spacecraft designed to orbit Mars and measure the red planet's magnetic field and atmosphere, along with a technology demonstration from Viasat as part of NASA’s Communications Services Project.

The Spin

Techno-optimist narrative

While the cancelled launch is a disappointment, one which was unavoidable, Blue Origin remains committed to seeing the mission through after negotiating an exemption with the FAA. NG-2 will push the New Glenn rocket's specifications to its limits, while spearheading NASA's space exploration efforts and testing the latest in communications equipment.

Techno-skeptic narrative

The billionaire space tourism pushed by Bezos, Musk and others represents the ultimate hypocrisy. While countless billions of ordinary people across the world struggle with real-life problems, this clique of the ultra-wealthy claims to be advancing mankind. In truth, their efforts are nothing more than vanity projects while the world and its climate fall apart around them.
