The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

There is still a long way to go to achieve lasting peace, but Trump's diplomatic breakthrough in brokering the peace deal between Rwanda and Congo shows the genuine American leadership in ending Africa's longest conflicts. His transparent approach to securing critical minerals while promoting peace resonates with African leaders who value honest transactional politics over contradictory rhetoric. The administration's success in persuading both foreign ministers to sign this historic agreement positions America as a credible peacemaker across the continent.

Anti-Trump narrative

The Trump administration portrays itself as a champion of peace, but this peace deal is nothing more than a cynical move to secure access to Congo's $24 trillion worth of mineral resources while legitimizing decades of Rwandan aggression. America plays a key role in laundering illegally smuggled Congolese minerals, with Rwanda's tantalum exports to the US increasing 15-fold after the M23 invasion. This sham agreement rewards Rwanda's plundering, while over 1,000 civilians have been killed since the deal was signed. This way, lasting peace remains an illusion.
