Europe must increase its investment in space technology to achieve strategic autonomy from the U.S., otherwise Europe will be beholden to an unpredictable America, whose previous iron-clad commitment to European security is questionable at best in an increasingly unstable world. By funding institutions like the ESA, Europe can create a coordinated response to its problems, which will help bridge the gap with its competitors.
Europe’s bloated state-led conglomerates will not compete with America’s free market. Unlike Europe, the U.S. benefits from strong private sector investment and billionaire entrepreneurs who have driven its space progress, often outpacing government agencies like NASA. If Europe is serious about reducing its dependence on the U.S., it should, like the U.S., promote private-sector solutions rather than pour government money into schemes like the ESA.
