Elections scheduled for December 2026 are a critical step toward restoring democratic legitimacy in Haiti after nearly a decade without a vote. It's up to the international community to reassert its renewed commitment to the country through the U.N.-backed gang suppression mission to provide the security foundation very much needed for Haiti to move forward.

Establishment-critical narrative

The international community has rushed elections in Haiti, outrageously ignoring the catastrophic reality on the ground, and Alix Didier Fils-Aimé is seizing the opportunity to extend his grip on power. Not only can any election under current circumstances only serve the interests of the dysfunctional status quo, but the new calendar and the planned constitutional referendum aggravate the problem.
