The Facts

Rapper Kid Cudi — real name Scott Mescudi — testified at the federal racketeering and sex trafficking trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs in New York on Thursday. It was the ninth day of proceedings, which are expected to last around eight weeks in total.

Mescudi alleged that Combs broke into his Los Angeles house in December 2011 after discovering that he was dating R&B singer Cassie Ventura Fine. He added that Ventura Fine called him in a distressed state after Combs had learned of their relationship, prompting Mescudi to take her to a nearby hotel.

There, Mescudi said he received a call from Combs' associate, who told him that Combs and another individual were in his house. Combs was not there when Mescudi arrived home, but security cameras had been tampered with, presents for his family were opened, and his dog was locked in the bathroom.

In a later incident in January 2012, Mescudi's Porsche was set on fire. Jurors were shown images of a cut to the car's soft-top roof and fire damage inside the vehicle. Mescudi said it looked like the "top of my Porsche was cut open, and that’s where the molotov cocktail was put in."

Earlier in the trial, Ventura Fine testified that Combs lunged at her with a corkscrew and kicked her in the back after learning of the relationship with Mescudi. She also alleged that Combs threatened to "blow up" Mescudi's car.

The Spin

Narrative A

The testimony from Mescudi adds weight and context to the troubling list of allegations Combs has been accused of. Prosecutors have argued that Combs is a vengeful and violent individual prepared to take extreme actions in pursuit of his criminal enterprise.

Narrative B

The testimonies coming out in Combs' trial are truly heinous, but it's important to remember that it's not only the individual on trial, but the whole of hip-hop culture. With the industry shaken by his alleged crimes, the dramatic fall of this archetypal hip-hop star will have ramifications for a cultural movement that has long tolerated misogyny and homophobia despite the progress made by the rest of society.
