The Facts

  • A landslide struck the village of Tarasin in Sudan's Marra Mountains on Sunday after days of heavy rainfall, killing an estimated 1,000 people, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army.
  • The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army reported that the landslide completely leveled the village to the ground and appealed to the UN and international aid organizations for assistance in recovering bodies buried under debris.
  • The affected area in the Marra Mountains had previously become a refuge for displaced families fleeing fighting between Sudan's military and the Rapid Support Forces, with many residents from North Darfur state seeking shelter there.

The Spin

Narrative A

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for international aid. Poor infrastructure, environmental degradation and climate change exacerbate disaster risks in Sudan. Global actors must respond swiftly to prevent further tragedy and help affected communities rebuild and recover with dignity and support.

Narrative B

It's an outrage that the West might be spurned to intervene in response to this disaster given that Sudan had already been facing facing famine, civil war and mass rape, yet humanitarian assistance from nations like the U.S. was cut. For the population of Sudan to be protected from further atrocities, richer nations cannot provide isolated support for this tragic incident, but must make plans for sustained efforts to address an ongoing genocide they have so far failed to notice.
