About 700 killed in Tanzania election protests, opposition says
Guardian1 day
Tanzania's election signifies a legitimate democratic process that deserves international recognition and support. The African Union has officially congratulated President Hassan on her victory, demonstrating continental acceptance of the results. It's now time to move forward peacefully within legal frameworks.
Tanzania's election was a complete sham that made a mockery of democracy. Months of systematic repression preceded the vote, opposition leaders were arrested and parties were excluded from participation. The imprisonment of the opposition leader on bogus treason charges exemplifies how far democratic institutions have collapsed in this authoritarian charade.
