Trump Expands Travel Restrictions to 20 New Countries

Is this a necessary security measure to protect Americans, or a racist policy targeting African and Muslim-majority nations?

The Spin

Republican narrative

By expanding travel restrictions, the Trump administration has taken decisive action to ensure the safety of U.S. citizens. Entrants from these countries posed a real threat to national security, with high visa overstay rates, terrorist activity at home and a refusal on the part of their governments to cooperate with U.S. immigration enforcement.

Democratic narrative

The expansion of the travel ban is nothing more than the administration’s blatant racism masquerading as national security. By targeting African and Muslim-majority countries, even Palestinians fleeing violence, the administration has revealed its true goal: keeping America white through xenophobic cruelty disguised as vetting concerns.
