Was the Aarau rave shooting a failure of gun policy or the result of a drug-fueled dispute?

The Facts

  • A 22-year-old woman was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at a techno rave held at the Schachen horse racing track in Aarau, Switzerland, at around 2:30 a.m. local time on Sunday.
  • The five injured victims — four men and one woman aged between 24 and 27 — were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to severe. All six victims were residents of Switzerland.
  • A 43-year-old Swiss man has been arrested, police said Monday, adding, "The investigation into the exact sequence of events, the background and the possible motive is currently under way." In an X post, Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni named the woman killed as Maria Spinelli.

The Spin

Narrative A

Mass shootings are rare in Switzerland, but this tragedy proves no level of gun ownership is without risk — even in one of Europe's most orderly nations. Authorities need answers fast, and the public deserves full accountability.

Narrative B

Jumping to conclusions ignores the obvious context. This happened at a late-night rave, and legal gun owners in Switzerland don't walk around armed at parties — this has all the markings of a drug-related dispute.
