The Spin

Narrative A

Tewolde Gebremariam is exactly the leader Air India needs to become a truly premier global carrier. His decade-plus run at Ethiopian Airlines — growing revenue fourfold and nearly tripling the fleet — proves he can execute the scale of turnarounds needed. If the next era of Air India is to be defined by expansion and growth, it demands this kind of bold, proven operational leadership.

Narrative B

Gebremariam may have commendable experience, but he is walking into a host of problems, including a record $2.3 billion loss, a fatal crash that killed 260 people and a third of international routes already cut. It will take an extraordinary effort to overcome these hurdles and return the airline to profitability while repairing its reputation; the issue is that this may be too much to ask.
