Alberta's referendum offers basic fairness and common sense. Ottawa's reckless open-border policies flooded the province with 600,000 newcomers in five years, overwhelming schools with 80,000 more students and crushing hospitals while Trudeau throttled oil and gas revenue. Giving Alberta control over immigration levels, requiring residency periods before accessing taxpayer-funded services and rebalancing Confederation through provincial autonomy protects services without breaking up the country.
Smith's referendum represents a clear crackdown on non-white immigrants, scapegoating newcomers for government failures in health care and education planning. The proposed head tax on immigrants echoes Canada's discriminatory past, while blaming population growth conveniently ignores the UCP's own "Alberta is Calling" campaign that spent over $10 million recruiting people to move there. This divisive distraction deflects from decades of infrastructure neglect and irresponsible fiscal management.
Smith’s referendum isn’t bold leadership — it’s a calculated stall tactic to kneecap the independence movement. Instead of acting now on immigration or Ottawa overreach, she’s kicking the can to October with symbolic questions she already controls. It’s a managed pressure valve designed to siphon anger, dilute momentum and keep Alberta tied to a federation that ignores it. Real change will only get postponed while separatist energy gets neutralized.
