School Roof Collapse in Pakistan Kills 28 Children, One Teacher
The Facts
- At least 28 children and a female teacher were killed Thursday when the roof of a private school collapsed in Pakistan's Peshawar. Lady Reading Hospital initially reported four deaths — the toll rose throughout the day.
- All of the pupils who died were aged 13 or younger, Lady Reading Hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim said. An emergency was declared at the facility, where the dead and more than a dozen injured people were brought from the site.
- Several children remained trapped under the rubble in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for the emergency services. Rescue crews are still removing debris to search for pupils and school staff.

No student or teacher schould be allowed inside any school, college or university until local inspectors certify the building fit for use. Poor families keep burying children because of the greed and negligence of those at the top.

Such a loss is already being met by serious attention from the top — immediate relief, the best available medical care for the injured, and stronger safety standards in every school.
