The Facts

  • David Hockney, the acclaimed British artist, has died aged 88, a statement from his publicist confirmed on Friday.
  • "The celebrated British artist David Hockney, one of the most important figures in contemporary art in both the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away peacefully at home on 11 June 2026, one month short of his 89th birthday," the statement read.
  • He was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1937 and proceeded to complete his studies at the Bradford School of Art before enrolling in the Royal College of Art in London. There, he held out on completing a final essay, stating he should be judged purely on his artwork, before administrators relented and bent the rules to let him graduate.

The Spin

Narrative A

Britain just lost one of its artistic titans. And Hockney was not only an acclaimed painter, but a genius in practically every medium, producing etchings, lithographs and photographs, even working with iPads and stained glass windows.

Narrative B

Hockney was an icon of the contemporary art world. But though he saw incredible success, he was never affected by it and maintained his working class sensibilities. Even as an 80-year-old, he would still paint for six or seven hours every day.
