Bumble to Go Private in $1.3 Billion Ithaca Deal
Is this a smart bet on human connection or a desperate fire sale that will bring more paywalls and less accountability?

The Facts
- Dating platform Bumble announced on Tuesday that it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by the technology holding company Ithaca Holdings in an all-cash deal valuing the company at $1.3 billion.
- The Wall Street Journal first broke the news on Monday. The report led Bumble's share price to surge nearly 50%, closing at $3.80, marking the company's largest single-day increase since it went public in February 2021.
- Under the deal, Bumble common shareholders will receive $6.05 per Class A share, a roughly 138% premium to the Oct. 9 close and a 119% premium to the 30-day volume-weighted average price as of Friday.

Taking Bumble private is the smartest acquisition, benefiting both users and the company. After all, frontier tech belongs in a business built on human connection, and real relationships will only get more valuable as AI makes everything else cheaper. Meanwhile, long-term ownership will facilitate patient management instead of chasing quarterly numbers.
Industry-critical narrative
Nothing illustrates Bumble's total desperation more than selling itself for a fraction of its peak valuation, after ditching its female-led mission in August. Private ownership, however, will not rescue its fortunes. Instead, it will mean more paywalls, more AI gimmicks and less accountability to the people who made the app matter.
