The Facts
- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday in Fort McMurray, Alberta, that Ottawa has listed a proposed West Coast oil pipeline, now called Pacific Link, as the first project of national interest under the Building Canada Act.
- The proposed line would run roughly 1,250 kilometers (about 777 miles) from Bruderheim, Alberta, to a deepwater port near Delta, British Columbia, largely following the existing Trans Mountain corridor, and carry about one million barrels of crude a day for export.
- Ottawa says Pacific Link would create 140,000 jobs, generate more than $20 billion in annual gross domestic product (GDP) and bring in $100 billion in government revenue by 2060. Alberta estimates it will collect over $265 billion in additional royalties over the pipeline's life.

Opening a direct route to Asia-Pacific markets ends the discount on Alberta crude and turns oil into real paycheques, hospital funding and school budgets. When a country with world-class energy reserves puts Pacific Link on the national interest list, energy sovereignty stops being a slogan and becomes a pipeline.
Government-critical narrative
Slapping a shiny new name on a pipeline and calling it a national priority doesn't move a single shovel of dirt. What's actually been announced is another year of consultations, a tangle of agreements that have to line up perfectly and zero explanation of what happens when they don't. Announcing a deadline isn't the same as building anything.
