The Facts

  • The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) added 12 Republican-held districts to its target list on Wednesday, bringing the total to 58 seats it aims to flip in the midterms, spanning swing states and Republican strongholds alike.
  • The expanded list includes National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Rep. Richard Hudson's North Carolina district, which President Donald Trump won by 15 points in 2024, as well as seats held by Reps. Lauren Boebert, French Hill and Victoria Spartz.
  • Florida's 12th District, held by Rep. Gus Bilirakis, was added to the DCCC list after redistricting made the Tampa Bay area seat about 14% less white and shifted Trump's margin there from roughly 67% to 57%.

The Spin

Narrative A

Democrats are better positioned heading into 2026 than they were before the 2018 blue wave, with forecasts showing an 85% chance of flipping the House. Running moderates in Trump districts has been a winning strategy, and that playbook is paying off again. The map, the numbers and the momentum all point to a Democratic takeover.

Narrative B

The Democrats are stumbling into 2026 with no real strategy beyond anti-Trump rage, and that's a losing hand even against the most unpopular president in modern history. Protecting a stale party establishment while refusing to stand for anything concrete has gutted whatever coalition once existed. Everything points the same direction: down.
