Version 7.18.2
Governments cannot keep closing legal migration routes and then act shocked when bodies wash ashore. Increasingly harsh border-first policies, combined with conflict, drought and joblessness at home, leave desperate families few alternatives to dangerous crossings, while safe pathways and properly funded rescue operations could save countless lives at a fraction of the cost. Treating drowned children as an acceptable price for tighter borders represents a profound moral failure of global migration policy.
More legal migration pathways won't fix a dangerous corridor that leads straight into a war zone and a smuggler's payday. The real killers are overcrowded boats run by ruthless traffickers, a collapsing Yemen and a strait contested by armed groups — none of which can be solved simply by issuing more visas. Lasting regional stability, stronger maritime security and dismantling the criminal smuggling networks are what will ultimately keep people off those deadly boats.
