DNC Sues to Halt Taxpayer-Funded Trump TV Ads

Is this the best to stop campaign propaganda or are Democrats just trying to silence routine government messaging?

The Facts

  • The Democratic National Committee (DNC) filed suit Wednesday in federal court in Washington seeking to block taxpayer-funded television ads promoting U.S. President Donald Trump, which have reportedly cost more than $12 million since September.
  • A separate suit was filed Wednesday by Democracy Forward on behalf of Common Cause, a New York public employee union and a Democratic legislative candidate in Alabama. Watchdog group CREW earlier complained to the Homeland Security inspector general.
  • The DNC complaint cites a measure Trump signed this year barring appropriated funds for publicity or propaganda, along with the Anti-Deficiency Act and the Purpose Statute, and seeks an injunction blocking further taxpayer spending on the advertisements.

The Spin

Anti-Trump narrative

Democrats have no choice but to sue the Trump administration because slapping a government label on campaign messaging and sending the bill to the Treasury is theft from every taxpayer. Pledging to switch to a super PAC after the ads already ran fixes nothing. The millions spent need to be paid back.

Pro-Trump narrative

Rushing to court weeks before an election is a form of panic from a party that can't win the argument on the merits. The Trump administration isn't doing anything different than past presidencies to inform the public. The funding already moved to private dollars, so the suit is a moot point.
