The Facts

  • The DOJ on Wednesday announced a nationwide tax fraud crackdown involving 76 defendants and over $490 million in estimated intended tax losses, carried out over about six weeks by 35 U.S. attorneys' offices and IRS investigators.
  • Prosecutors filed 23 new charging actions against 31 defendants tied to over $350 million in alleged intended losses, while 45 other defendants were involved in trials, guilty pleas and sentencing accounting for nearly $140 million.
  • At a news conference Wednesday, Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald and several U.S. attorneys outlined the cases. McDonald said investigators targeted those who "lied on purpose," rather than filers who clicked the wrong button.

The Spin

Right narrative

Income taxes punish production and send capital packing, which is exactly why low-tax havens keep winning. Funding government through consumption taxes and fees would spread the cost across every citizen and make the price of spending impossible to ignore.

Narrative B

Chasing down tax cheats defends every honest filer in the country. Every dollar stolen through phony refunds and hidden income is a dollar lifted straight out of the pockets of people who actually pay. Strong enforcement is the only thing that keeps fraud from looking like easy money.
