France Faces Nationwide Strikes Over Budget Plans
Is a public pay freeze a fair share of deficit-cutting or a political choice that spares the military and the rich?

Pro-government narrative
Cutting the exploding deficit is the nation's most important task, and a pay index freeze is a fair share of an effort asked of everyone, from retirees to ministries. Torching cars and firing mortars near schools is no way to make the case for better schools, and lawmakers cheering the chaos on are failing the protesters they claim to defend.
Government-critical narrative
Freezing the wages of teachers, firefighters and hospital staff while the military budget doubles and the rich get tax breaks is a political choice. Meanwhile, young people ask for schools that work and instead receive tear gas and arrests. France will not fall for unethical austerity presented as fairness.
